Managing a Telegram group with more than 50 members without tools is doable but painful. After 200 members it becomes unsustainable. After 500 it’s impossible without automation.
This article goes through the types of tools that exist to admin Telegram groups, what problem each one solves, and which ones are actually worth it depending on the kind of group you manage.
The four functions any admin needs
When your group grows, you’ll run into four types of recurring problems:
- Moderation: inappropriate messages, spam, problematic users.
- Member management: signups, removals, verifications, roles.
- Response automation: repeat questions, welcomes, rules.
- Monetization: charges, paid access, subscription management.
A single tool rarely covers all four well. The normal approach is to combine two or three based on your group’s priorities.
Moderation: antispam bots
Combot. One of the best-known bots. Detects spam automatically, manages warnings and bans, offers group statistics. Free version limited; pro version with advanced features.
Shieldy. Specialized in detecting spam bots that infiltrate groups. Asks for verification on entry («solve this captcha») and blocks those who don’t respond. Very useful if your group is public and gets waves of spam.
Rose. Multi-purpose bot with moderation, word filters, configurable warnings. Popular in English-speaking groups.
Tip: for moderation, start with one and add others only if there’s a problem the first one doesn’t cover. Don’t install 5 bots because in the end they step on each other.
Member management: verification and role bots
GroupHelp. Lets you configure automatic rules: welcome, assign roles, verify age, restrict messages based on role. Useful for groups with different kinds of members (VIP, staff, new).
Miss Rose. Similar to GroupHelp but with more customization. Good for large groups with specific needs.
Tip: if your group is paid, these generic bots won’t handle member management (signups/cancellations). You need a specific subscription system (see monetization section below).
Response and FAQ automation
Welcomebot. Sends automatic welcome messages to new members. Can include group rules, useful links, basic instructions.
FAQ Bot. Automatically answers frequently asked questions. You configure the answers once and the bot responds every time someone asks something you’ve already answered.
Tip: for paid groups, a good welcome message explaining how everything works drastically reduces the number of questions you personally have to answer.
Monetization: the problem generic bots don’t solve
This is where most admin tools fall short. Moderation bots don’t know who paid. Welcome bots don’t kick out those who stopped paying. Antispam bots don’t connect to Stripe.
To charge for a Telegram group you need a specific tool that connects a payment system (usually Stripe) with Telegram and automates:
- Automatic signups: when someone pays, they enter the group without your intervention.
- Automatic removals: when someone stops paying, they’re kicked from the group.
- Renewal management: recurring charges processed on their own.
- Member records: who paid what and when.
Main options in the market for this:
InviteMember. One of the most popular tools. Connects Stripe with Telegram, manages access and payments. Mature interface but commissions that add up with volume.
Memberful (not Telegram-specific but with integration): more focused on newsletters and memberships, has Telegram integration. Good if you already use Memberful for other things.
Specialized tools: there are several that focus only on Telegram-Stripe. The advantage of specialized tools is that they usually support both paid groups and paid broadcast lists, something generic ones sometimes don’t handle.
What no tool gives you for free
No matter how much automation you have, some things depend on you:
Content quality. Tools handle logistics. The reason people pay is still your content. If your group doesn’t provide value, no tool will fix it.
Relationship with members. A 100% automated group quickly loses human warmth. Members want to feel there’s someone on the other side. Even if you delegate technical management, you have to maintain the relationship yourself.
Conflict moderation. Bots detect obvious spam, but they don’t detect passive-aggressive tone between two members, or a discussion that’s about to overflow. Human moderation is still necessary at key moments.
Recommended combination by group type
Free group with organic growth:
- Combot or Rose (moderation)
- Shieldy (entry antispam)
- Welcomebot (welcomes)
- Cost: free or very low.
Large free group (1000+ members):
- Combot Pro or similar (advanced moderation)
- GroupHelp (roles and verification)
- FAQ Bot (reduce question load)
- Cost: low-medium.
Paid group:
- Specific monetization tool (InviteMember or specialized in Telegram+Stripe)
- Combot or similar as complement (moderation)
- The monetization bot usually already includes automatic welcome and access management.
- Cost: depends on volume and chosen tool.
The most common mistake when choosing tools
Installing 5 bots at the start because «the more the better.» Each bot adds complexity: permissions, commands, conflicts between them. Members get confused with so many bots.
Start with one or two based on your real need and add more only when a specific problem isn’t covered.
If you manage a paid Telegram group and want to automate the full cycle (payments, signups, removals, renewals) without building it yourself, Telegram Control natively connects Stripe with your private groups and broadcast lists.
