How to set up real-time Stripe alerts by email and Telegram

Stripe doesn’t alert you in real time when something important happens in your account. A payment fails, a customer cancels, a dispute opens — and you find out hours or days later, if at all.

Stripe’s emails land in the same inbox as everything else. Dashboard notifications require you to log in and look. By the time you see the problem, the window to act has closed.

Why you need instant alerts

The difference between acting in the first 2 hours and acting the next day is huge:

Failed payment. If you reach out the same day, recovery probability is 50%-60%. Wait a week, it drops to 10%.

Cancellation. If you talk to the customer while they still have access, you can retain them. Once they’re gone, it’s much harder to get them back.

Dispute. You have a limited window to respond (7-21 days depending on the bank). Every day lost to not knowing is one less day to prepare your defense.

Abandoned 3D Secure. If the customer didn’t complete verification, the sooner you send the retry link, the more likely they’ll complete the purchase.

Email vs Telegram: which to use

Email works well as backup and for non-urgent information. The problem: it gets lost in the inbox, can go to spam, and isn’t read instantly.

Telegram arrives as an immediate push notification on your phone. 70%-80% read rate. You see the message within seconds. For urgent alerts, it’s the ideal channel.

Ideally have both active. Telegram to see it instantly, email as a record you can check later. They’re not exclusive — they complement each other.

Which events to monitor

Not everything deserves an alert. If you receive 50 notifications a day, you stop paying attention. Events that actually need instant alerts:

Failed payment. Every failed payment is revenue at risk. You need to see it to act or verify the automatic system is handling it.

Incomplete 3D Secure. A customer who wanted to buy and couldn’t. A lost sale you can recover in minutes.

Cancellation requested. A customer who’s going to leave but hasn’t left yet. Window to retain.

Dispute opened. Urgent because of the response deadline.

Expiring card. Less urgent, but if you don’t see it, the next charge will fail.

Payment recovered. Positive — confirms the recovery system is working.

How to set it up

With an alert system configured, the flow is:

  1. An event occurs in Stripe (payment fails, cancellation, etc.).
  2. Stripe’s webhook sends it to your system.
  3. Your system checks if you have alerts enabled for that event type.
  4. Sends the notification through your chosen channels (email, Telegram, or both).

Configuration is per event: you can enable Telegram for failed payments but only email for expiring cards. Every business has different needs.

For Telegram: you link your Telegram account with a bot (done once, takes 30 seconds) and from then on you receive alerts as private messages. You don’t need a Telegram group or the Telegram module — it’s just a notification channel.

The impact of having alerts vs not

Without alerts, your routine is: go into the dashboard when you remember, check for problems, act. It can be a day or more between something happening and you seeing it.

With alerts, your routine is: you get a Telegram message, see «failed payment from customer@email.com — $30,» decide whether to act now or let the automatic system handle it. Total: 5 seconds of your time.

The difference isn’t just speed. It’s peace of mind. You know that if something happens, you’ll find out. You don’t have to watch the dashboard constantly.

Stripe Control includes instant alerts by email and Telegram for 6 event types: failed payments, incomplete 3DS, cancellations, disputes, expiring cards, and recovered payments. Configurable per event and channel.
